The Long Beach Police Department will participate in the State of New York Governor's Traffic Safety Committee "OPERATION SAFE STOP" on Wednesday, March 30, 2011.  This program is aimed at educating motorists that passing a stopped school bus is both dangerous and illegal.  It is a violation of section 1174 of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.  Motorists should be aware that the first-time fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is a minimum of $250.00 and 5 points on your drivers license.  A second conviction within three years results in a minimum fine of $600.00.  A third or subsequent conviction within three years results in a minimum fine of $750.00.

The Long Beach Police Department will supplement additional patrols throughout Long Beach during this enforcement initiative.  As usual, the Long Beach Police department will have a zero tolerance policy for motorists who pass a stopped school bus.

For further information on Operation Safe Stop visit the Traffic Safety Committee's website at http://www.nygtsc.state.ny.us/opsafstp.htm
